This is the -draft- NamesCon schedule, which is tentative and subject to revisions as we receive confirmations from keynotes and session panelists.

Are you registered for NamesCon? Conference access is all or nothing. Registered attendees can participate in all content sessions.

There are sessions that have limited capacity, instructional materials, or other limitations, and may require attendees to indicate they will participate. This is particularly the case on Sunday, January 11 for DomainFest @NamesCon and Workshop sessions during NamesCon.

If you see one or more of these sessions that you can’t miss, such as the Chinese Domaining Masterclass or Workshops like the Amazon Route 53 / EC2 buildout session, make sure to use the sched system to indicate it so that the instructors and workshop leaders have a concept of headcount and capacity limits can be respected.

NamesCon attendees are automatically enrolled in the WaterNight event, and it is possible to attend that event if not attending NamesCon. WaterNight-only passes are available through a separate registration at WaterNight.org.

Panel Discussion: Claims ... Can I register -that- domain?
The new gTLD program included numerous rights protection mechanisms to safeguard the rights of others.  One of these was called 'Claim Notice'.

When a new TLD registration has a match at the second level with an entry in the TMCH, the potential registrant is presented with a 'claims' notice during the registration process that they must click on to affirm that they know there is an existing trademark.

Did you find an amazing generic dictionary word or otherwise perfect domain name under the new TLDs that matches your company (or idea for one) where you were presented this notice?

Find out some practical guidelines on how to respect the rights of others while respecting your own at the same time.    That perfect domain name may actually be available to you.

Data Science for the Domain Name Industry

With every purchase, search, and website interaction, your customers are hinting at what products they want to buy. Data Science gives us the tools to listen and react accordingly: Which domain is right for which customer? What related services should you upsell? Where can you find customers desperate for your new TLD, if only they knew it existed? "Big Data" isn't just a buzzword. In this panel, we'll show hands-on case studies of putting data science to work growing sales for registrars, registries and domain sellers with innovative new tools designed specifically for the domain industry.

Gain insight into the competitive landscape not just for domains, but value-added services. Learn how data on usage of domain names can increase predictability of renewals and opportunities to up-sell value-added services. Understand the value of your customers’ websites and their economic footprint on the internet.

Examples are intended to be immediately actionable for a non-technical audience, perfect for marketers, managers, and sales.

If you have read this far, here's something special for you....    As an extra incentive to wake up after WaterNight, we’ll be giving away a new GoPro to one lucky attendee!

Legendary Tales
This fun and comic session was called "Dude, what were you thinking?!?!" at the 2014 NamesCon.  Basically, it included magnificent anecdotes from some of the best legal minds in the business of domain names.  Legends, if you will.

Join legends as they share some legendary tales - some 'doozies', and amazing anecdotes from real world experiences in working with clients or third parties.

If you want to keep both feet planted on the deck of the "clue train", this is a great session to hear about folks who missed the train entirely or need to get an "oober" to the intersection of 'basic logic' and 'common sense' ASAP.

The DROP Zone - Evolution of Tools in the Secondary Market
Securing the deleting ("Dropping") names from registrars and registries has become a robust business.

As unrenewed or deleted domains proceed through the expiry and deletion process, they are deleted and released by the registry.  There is a whole robust marketplace around the domains that return to availability, and some ingenius technologies that have evolved to aid in the acquisition of names as they delete.

The new TLDs that launched a year ago are going to start seeing drop activity - are you positioned to recognize and take advantage of potential opportunities?

Universal Acceptance of Domain Names
This is a non-technical session that will talk through and highlight the activities of registries, the Domain Name Association (DNA), and ICANN as they all work and coordinate solutions to domain names behaving correctly with software, and ... well, just working.

ICANN and the community have been working very hard in tandem to help make sure that the new Top Level Domains (TLDs), Internationalized (Non-ASCII), and other changes to the naming system function within an expected manner.

Just like two digit year fields drew the Y2K "issue" to the forefront, there are many systems and services, both online and offline, that have similar issues with the domain names used in today's internest.

From software libraries to search engines, to spam filters and email services and web browsers, having domain names, new and old, behave correctly requires a lot of activity.

This session will explain what Universal Acceptance is, what it solves, what the activity is around solutions and coordination on current and future efforts.

The 'Ten Percent Rule' for Domain Names in Advertising!

People in the domain name industry who want to sell more domain names should attend this session.  Understand corporate budgets are what they are, but this session will help people who buy or sell domain names.

Internet Retailer’s Top 500 guide (Top500Guide.com) includes countless examples of the most successful online companies in the world using generic domain names to attract Internet traffic and to do business at very low costs. Here are just a few examples:

  • AC Lens’ DiscountContactLenses.com

  • Amazon’s Diapers.com & BeautyBar.com

  • Ancestry.com – A top 500 Internet retailer (#63 in the world)

  • Art.com (#128 in the world)

  • Book(s).com – both owned by Barnes & Noble

  • Bare Necessities’ Lingerie.com (#258 on the list)…

Without getting past the B’s it is obvious that domain names matter. These are top 500 Internet retailers. Companies pay millions to own high-traffic domains like this. But there is a much larger group of lesser domain names that are just as important to your business. You need to think about domain names as an offense and a defense. The largest, smartest companies in the world have been doing this for years. This is a highly kept secret! Let’s talk about it…
